U-M Office of Undergraduate Admissions

Guest/non-degree

Deadlines | Application

Guest Applicants

A guest applicant is a student who is completing an undergraduate degree at another university/college and intends to take courses during the Spring term (May–June), Summer term (July–August), or Spring/Summer term (May–August) for purposes other than seeking another undergraduate degree. A guest applicant may also be a high school graduate who will be a first year student at another university/college for the following fall term.

Guest applicants must use a special application. Download and print the application, complete it, and mail it to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions by the appropriate deadline. The applications are in Adobe PDF format.

Non-degree Applicants

A non-degree applicant is a student who has completed an undergraduate degree and intends to take courses during the fall and/or winter terms for purposes other than seeking another undergraduate degree. A non-degree applicant may also be a high school student with special permission for dual enrollment. See the application for appropriate deadlines. The applications are in Adobe PDF format.

International Non-degree Applicants

All applicants who meet at least one of the following criteria must review our International Admissions information online, regardless of your citizenship:

  1. A portion of your academic experience was completed outside of the U.S.
  2. Students who are non-native speakers of English.
  3. International students holding or requesting temporary U.S. visas including the F1 or J1 student visa status

Application process. No application fee is required with the non-degree application. All foreign nationals are, however, required to submit official documentation of satisfactory academic achievement in earlier academic coursework. Official translations are required for transcripts issued in languages other than English. All speakers of English as a second language are required to submit proof of English language proficiency as demonstrated by the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), the Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB), or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS). We require the following score ranges: 88-106 on the new internet-based TOEFL (ibT) with section scores of at least 23 in listening, speaking, and reading, and in the 21 range in writing; 570-610 on the paper-based TOEFL with each section score of at least 57; 230-250 on the computer-based TOEFL with each section score of at least 23; 80-85 on the MELAB with each section score of at least 80; or 6.5-7.0 on the IELTS with each section score of at least 6.5. The booklet, Undergraduate International Admissions Information, contains additional information on registration procedures for English language proficiency tests. Foreign nationals desiring the F-1 or J-1 visa eligibility forms (I-20 or DS-2019) must provide proof of sufficient financial resources to meet the cost of tuition and maintenance. The Office of Undergraduate Admissions Financial Resources Statement must be submitted by all applicants who hold or plan to obtain an F-1 (Student) or J-1 (Exchange Visitor) visa.

Admission notification. Non-degree students cannot register until the first day of classes or thereafter. Students admitted to units other than LSA should contact the counseling office of their unit for registration information. At the time the admission action is taken, however, applicants are sent a letter of admissibility and a certificate of eligibility for an appropriate nonimmigrant visa, thereby allowing them to complete visa arrangements.

Registration. Students registering on the first day of classes may enroll only in those courses which still have spaces for additional students and for which they are qualified. Under immigration law, persons in the F-1 (Student) and J-1 (Exchange Visitor) visa categories must register for a full-time course load (12 or more credits) during fall and winter terms (6 or more credits in spring half or summer half terms).

Orientation. Non-degree students are not required to attend the Orientation Program, which offers information on registration procedures, academic programs, university regulations, and campus life. All foreign nationals new to the University are, nonetheless, strongly encouraged to do so. Dates of the Orientation Program are listed in the Information for Admitted International Undergraduate Students booklet included with the letter of admissibility.

Housing. Although non-degree students have no priority for on-campus housing, the Housing Office is usually able to place persons interested in living in a residence hall. The Housing Office will send housing applications to students found admissible in accord with the mailing schedule in the Student Housing leaflet mailed with the letter of admissibility.

Financial Aid. No loans or scholarships are available to non-degree students. Persons in the F-1 or J-1 status can request permission to work part time on campus, if they are successful in finding a position.

Transcripts. An official transcript of coursework is maintained by the Registrar's Office. Coursework taken as a non-degree student could be applied to a degree program, if the student were admitted to such a program later.

We are concerned that you understand the limitations of non-degree status prior to beginning the application process. Should your interest in coming to the University of Michigan as a non-degree student continue, please complete and return the above non-degree application. We welcome your contact, should you have questions.
