Once you've made the decision to become a Wolverine, you will need to apply to one specific school or college, or for dual enrollment in two schools or colleges.

The nine units that admit first-year students include:

All applicants follow the same basic steps to apply to U-M (although there are variations for transfer and international students). First, you need to fill out and submit the Common Application. Please note, you will need to complete specific University of Michigan questions in addition to those required by the Common App.

The University of Michigan expects all applicants to be familiar with and abide by the Common App Fraud Policy, which prohibits Registered Users from using the tool for for any fraudulent, unlawful, deceptive, or other harmful or injurious purposes, including but not limited to the transmission of materially inaccurate or untrue information. The Policy also prohibits the use of AI systems to generate content.

*Due to capacity constraints, students who apply for admission into the College of LSA or the College of Engineering and are considering computer science as a major must now request selection into the major on the Common Application. For additional information, visit the Computer Science and Engineering Admissions webpage.

**Students can apply directly to the Learning, Equity, and Problem Solving for the Public Good (LEAPS) first-year admitting major in the Marsal School. The LEAPS major is the only first-year admitting major within the school, but first-year applicants interested in upper-level programs have the option of applying for Preferred Admission.

***Ross students who apply through LSA enroll in Ross as a Direct Admit student. Students who choose one of the other schools will be Preferred Admit Students.

****The School of Music, Theatre & Dance (SMTD) does not participate in Early Action and has a unique Dec. 1 application deadline. All applications to the Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning will receive their Taubman College decision as part of the Regular Decision process and are not considered for Early Action. However, any Stamps, LSA, or Engineering dual-degree application submitted with the SMTD or Taubman College application will receive Early Action consideration if completed by the Nov. 1 deadline.

Application Tips

We want to ensure that you are able to complete your application to the University of Michigan. Here are some common questions and concerns.

For technical questions about the Common Application, please contact the Common App's Help Center. Before you contact them, you may wish to check the Common App's known issues page.

Questions about the U-M Questions, our schools and colleges, or any other admissions matter can be directed to the University of Michigan Office of Undergraduate Admissions at 734-764-7433.

How can I be sure that you received my application?

Once you submit the Common Application, the Common App Dashboard allows you to track and manage your progress. Select Dashboard and click on the University of Michigan to see whether the elements of our application are complete. Once the dashboard shows a green check mark for U-M, we will be able to download your application.

You will receive an email confirmation from us within one week of our download of your application. Make sure to add @umich.edu to your safe senders list, and double check your spam folders to prevent missing this email.

You don't have my teacher recommendation, although I know that I invited them.

For the Common App, there is a difference between inviting a recommender and assigning one. Inviting involves entering the recommender's name and email address. To assign, you must select the "assign" button at the bottom of the Assign Recommenders page. This assignment must be done before teachers and other recommenders can see a student on their list.

If I'm having difficulty submitting documents through the Common App, can I just mail them to you?

No, we strongly prefer that documents be submitted through the application. These documents are automatically connected to your application. Duplicate documents sent via other means will burden the review process and slow down your decision.

I submitted documents through the Common App, but they are not showing up in U-M's system.

If it has been less than five days since the application was submitted, wait until five days have passed and then check again in Enrollment Connect.

The Dashboard is not displaying after I believe I have completed a section on the Common Application.

Students who encounter this problem should contact the Common App Help Center.
