Prospective Freshmen

choosing a school or college

Freshmen applicants may apply to one of the six academic units:

*High school students interested in applying to the School of Music, Theatre & Dance have the option of applying for "Dual Enrollment" with LSA or Engineering. All other applicants may apply to only one School or College.

All applicants who meet at least one of the following criteria must also review our International Admissions information online. Regardless of your citizenship:

  1. A portion of your academic experience was completed outside of the U.S.
  2. Students who are non-native speakers of English.
  3. International students holding or requesting temporary U.S. visas including the F1 or J1 student visa status.

Preferred Admissions Program

The preferred admissions program is available to freshmen applicants only. Admission to one of the University of Michigan's third-year professional or graduate programs is guaranteed to a limited number of highly qualified freshmen that maintain a specified level of academic achievement during their undergraduate years. The purpose is to encourage greater academic freedom and diversity of course selection, and to prevent students from feeling pressured to take a narrowly structured pre-professional undergraduate program.

Interested applicants should specify, on item 10 of their application, which of the programs below they would like to be considered for and attach a letter stating their reasons for desiring admission into the program. Selections are made in early April and the invitations to the program will provide students with a detailed description of the achievement expectations required for the program.

Participating units for applicants to freshman-level schools and colleges include:

  • A. Alfred Taubman College of Architecture + Urban Planning (available only for applicants to the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts)
  • Stephen M. Ross School of Business (available only for applicants to the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts, or the College of Engineering)
  • School of Dentistry (available only for applicants to the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts)
  • School of Education
  • School of Information
  • College of Pharmacy (available only for applicants to the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts)
  • School of Social Work (available only for applicants to the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts)

The following undergraduate schools and colleges admit at the sophomore or junior level:

Freshmen applicants wishing to earn a baccalaureate degree from these undergraduate schools and colleges typically apply for admission to the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts for their pre-professional preparation.
