Completing the Application

You may submit a paper application or apply on the web. Both application methods will be treated equally; however, your application will not be reviewed until we have received all of the required materials. Before you apply, please check to make sure that your desired program of study is at the undergraduate level.

NOTE: Be sure the name you fill in on your application is your FULL LEGAL NAME. This must be the name that appears on your passport. Your name, as it appears on your application, should also be the same on each of your documents and test score reports.

To apply on the web, go to: www.admissions.umich.edu/applying and follow the instructions provided. You must submit the documents listed below either before or immediately after completing the online application. Documents should be mailed to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions together in one envelope whenever possible. Be sure that the name provided on each document is the same as the name you provided on your online application. A credit card is required to submit your application online.

To submit a paper application, return the completed application, together with your essays and the following documents, to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions. (You can get a paper application either by contacting the Office of Undergraduate Admissions, or by downloading a PDF from www.admissions.umich.edu/applying.)

•    The required application fee payable in U.S. dollars to the University of Michigan must be enclosed to process your application. You may use an international money order, a bank draft or personal check drawn on a U.S. bank, or credit card (Visa or MasterCard). Payment should not be made in currency, and we cannot accept stamps. If these alternatives are difficult, we suggest that you ask a friend or relative living in another country to send the fee for you. Be sure to ask the friend or relative to include your full name with the fee. If this is not possible, you may submit the equivalent in UNESCO coupons. Be sure to send your full name along with the coupons.
•    Official documentation of the last four years of your secondary school studies, including mark sheets, examination certificates and diplomas earned. All documents must be in the original language and must be certified, as appropriate, by an American Embassy or Consular Official, an American notary public, a school administrator, or a national government official. An officially certified English translation must be attached to documents not issued originally in English. Documents should be enclosed with the completed application.
•    English proficiency test scores (MELAB, TOEFL, or IELTS) sent directly from the testing agency. You must also enclose a CERTIFIED copy of your score report with your application.
•    Official SAT or ACT plus Writing scores submitted directly by the testing agency (freshman applicants only). You must also enclose a CERTIFIED copy of your score report with your application. Rush paper score reports from the testing agency are not accepted.
•    Financial Resources Statement with attached required supporting documentation is required for F-1 and J-1 student visas (form included with the application).
•    Please enclose only documents related to test scores and academic achievements (including music). Do not enclose documents related to extracurricular activities, community service, or sports achievements. Instead, list these achievements on the application.

Application Deadlines

All of the above documents must be received before the deadlines. When we receive your application, we will send you a letter or e-mail message confirming that we have received your application and notifying you of when you will receive our admission decision. ONLY after ALL documents and test scores are received can your application be reviewed.

You are encouraged to apply as early as possible. Some schools and colleges (such as LSA and Engineering) may close admission well before the deadline. In general, students who are applying from overseas should submit their applications as early as possible after our application becomes available in August of each year and well in advance of published deadlines. Please see www.admissions.umich.edu or the undergraduate application for more deadline information.

Deadlines are listed below for the various terms. However, consideration for admission to all units is made on a space-available basis.

Fall: February 1
Winter: October 1
Spring Half: February 1
Summer Half: February 1

March 1 is the fall transfer deadline for Dental Hygiene, Engineering, Kinesiology (except for sports management).
