Applying at the Correct Level
Undergraduate students are those planning to earn a U.S. bachelor’s degree. This degree normally represents a total of 16 years of formal education, including 12 years at the primary-secondary level and four years at the university level.
Students who have completed secondary education as defined under the section “Educational Requirements for Your Country,” are usually eligible to apply as undergraduate freshman. You will need to supply credentials to verify that you have completed secondary school.
Students who have already completed one or more semesters of university-level studies are usually eligible to apply as undergraduate transfer students. Undergraduate transfer students are usually eligible to receive credit for their previous university study. Transfer students to the Business School, School of Education, and the College of Engineering need to request special applications from those schools.
Students who have already completed four years of university study may be eligible for graduate study. This level awards master’s and doctorate degrees. The University of Michigan has a large number of graduate programs, all of which require a different application. Contact: University of Michigan Rackham School of Graduate Studies, 915 E. Students who have begun university study outside of the U.S. and do not plan to earn a degree at the University of Michigan may also study at the University of Michigan. Students may come for one or two terms, and then return home to finish their degrees. Such students are called non-degree or guest students. Inquiries about these programs can be addressed to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions. Request the “International Non-Degree Status” application packet and specify the term you wish to attend.
