Faculty

Leaders, Mentors, World-Changers

At the University of Michigan, breadth and depth start with our faculty. Among them are nationally and internationally recognized scholars and innovative thinkers—many, the leading lights in their respective fields. From earning election to the National Academy of Science to winning the Nobel Prize, the research they conduct not only gains attention, it impacts the world. The EKG was developed here as well as the precursor to today’s Internet. You’ll find this type of innovative work across all 12 Schools and Colleges—both the National Election Studies and the University of Michigan Consumer Sentiment Index are excellent examples.

Yet, if the University of Michigan is a great research institution, it is an equally great teaching institution. The research our faculty conduct continually shapes the course of your education—in several fields, you’ll be learning at the leading edge. They bring new thinking into the classrooms, labs, art and design studios in which you will learn. They strive to create a community of excellence wherever they teach—they work equally hard to bring students like you into the conversation. From inspiring classroom dialogues that continue out across campus to collaborating with undergraduate students on challenging research to traveling with them across the globe, our faculty deliver excellent teaching on many levels. This can be measured by the national teaching awards with which they’ve been honored, such as the U.S. Professors of the Year Competition awarded by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching.  Their commitment is also acknowledged by the National Survey of Student Engagement, an annual survey in which Michigan students give their teachers high marks. The evidence is clear: the University of Michigan faculty model and inspire a deeper level of engagement in students. They are leaders and mentors who will bring out the best in you.
