The 12 Michigan Learning Communities (MLCs) are a unique way to expand your education beyond the classroom. Though not required, they strike a balance between the opportunity offered by size and scope of a major public university while offering the intimacy of a small liberal arts college. By transforming the classroom into a space for community building and extending the learning conversation into the residence hall where you’ll live with students of similar interests, you’ll work to discover knowledge in an atmosphere of peers. Through the MLCs, you’ll engage with purpose; explore connections between different ideas, ways of seeing and thinking. What is the relationship between string theory in physics and music? What does neuroscience tell us about the philosophy of Descartes? What do sustainability and Don Quixote have in common? The University of Michigan Learning Communities provide a deeper, more relevant experience. LSA Residential Communities

These two Michigan Learning Communities are open only to students admitted to the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts. Both offer a residential component.

• HONORS PROGRAM Offers special depth and academic challenge to highly motivated students, and includes personalized advising, research opportunities, and close contact with faculty. • RESIDENTIAL COLLEGE A small four-year program that provides any LSA student an engaging environment with an emphasis on languages, writing, and the arts. The RC enables students to combine the resources and options of the larger university with the lively intellectual atmosphere of a small, liberal arts college. These learning communities offer you personalized support and special opportunities to take full advantage of the University’s resources, but they do not have a group living component.
