Welcome to my blog!

Hey everyone! My name is Mitch, and I’m a freshman in LSA. I’m also in the Honors Program within LSA. Right now I’m 100% undecided on my major, and I’m loving it! I’m trying lots of different classes and trying a whole range of things to see what I’m interested…as soon as I feel “inspired” or I try something that I love, I’ll declare my major, but until then, I’m doing everything!

I just got back from Thanksgiving break, and I’m so glad I got to relax for a few days before finals season starts up! This week isn’t too bad, but the next two weeks are going to be really busy in terms of reviewing all my course material from the semester and getting ready for finals! But then I’ll have a nice winter break with NO homework at all (because Michigan puts winter break in between semesters, so you’ve finished all your Fall Term classes and haven’t started your Winter term classes yet…genius, eh?).

Right now, I’m in five classes: Great Books, Calculus III, Spanish, a freshman seminar called “Law and Psychology,” and a University Course about how to use Michigan’s library system and different research tools. I love all my classes, especially my seminar, which only has 14 students! We have a lot of really interesting discussions in that class, as well as “court cases” where we read a book about a real case, assign lawyers to give closing arguments in support of each side (prosecution and defense) and then the other students form the “jury” and deliberate and reach a verdict. Those are really fun!

I’ve found that college is definitely more work than high school, but I really love all my classes, so I’m more interested in working hard in my classes. When you’re in a class you love, it’s much more enjoyable to do the homework! I tend to use the Law Library for my homework, as it is a really quiet place to study and I like to work in near-total silence. A lot of my friends like a bit more noise while they work, so they go over to the Undergraduate Library or work in their rooms.

I just got accepted as a student facilitator with the Office of Student Conflict Resolution, so I’m really excited for my training session this weekend, where I’ll learn how to help students who have conflicts reach peaceful and viable agreements. I’m also looking forward to a POPS concert, which is a student instrumental ensemble on campus. There’s always something happening, and I try to go to as many events as possible! It’s really fun to go to lectures on things you know nothing about…I always leave fascinated by a new idea or something interesting the speaker said!

I’m going to work on some calc homework, but until next time, GO BLUE!
