tips for applying online

  • Follow these instructions and those on the online application pages. Freshman applicants – we do not recommend using the instructions for our hard copy application while completing the online application.
  • The answers to the Preliminary Questions are critical to your completion of the application. Read them slowly and answer very carefully. You may update them at any time by selecting that option in the upper right hand corner of any page. Be sure to read the important information below about selecting the appropriate School or College before you finalize your Preliminary Questions.
  • Save your work frequently! For your privacy and security, the application will time out after 40 idle minutes. You can work on and view your application from any computer with internet access.
  • Print out the preview version of each page of your application to proof your work, but please DO NOT MAIL the preview copy to us! Once you have submitted your application, we will receive our own .pdf version of your application which will be used by the Office of Undergraduate Admissions to review your application.
  • It is easy to go back and correct mistakes and omissions; however, once your application has been submitted to the University of Michigan you are no longer able to make changes to your application.
  • To fit your answers on to the .pdf version of your application, there are space limitations for some fields. Use common sense abbreviations in these spaces. You may also elaborate on any aspect of your application on the “Additional Information” page.
  • We recommend that you compose your essays, additional information, and Resume/Repertoire (School of Music, Theatre & Dance applicants only) in a word-processing program. Proof and spell-check those pages before uploading into your online application.
  • The Application Inspector is your friend! You will not be able to submit without completing required fields or with incompatible information.
  • Credit card payment is required for submission of those applications that require fees. Have a credit card handy when you are ready to submit.
  • Do not forget to submit! The University will not have access to partially complete or applications that were never submitted. You will receive a series of confirmation emails once you have successfully submitted the application.
  • Once your online application is complete, make sure you send in any other required information, such as transcripts. You can check your status online once we have received your application; however, keep in mind that it does take at least 10 business days to process your application and other supporting documents. Items will not show up as “received” online until 10 business days have passed.
