Housing
There’s a good reason why we use the term “residence halls” instead of “dorms.” They’re much more than just buildings with places for students to sleep. The residents and staff of each hall work together to create a supportive, multicultural living environment where students can study, eat, socialize, learn, and relax. While each of our halls is unique in terms of its size, location, and extra amenities, all of them are smoke-free and offer community learning centers, cable TV, laundry facilities, student governance opportunities, and more.
How to Apply for On-Campus Housing
Almost all University Housing communications and application processes are conducted electronically. It is very important that you follow the instructions you will receive soon after admission to set up a unique name and University email account and then to check your email regularly for important information from University Housing.
First-year students who have paid the University enrollment deposit by mid-April will be able to access an online residence hall application and, if the application is submitted by the deadline provided with the application, these students will be eligible to participate in a residence hall lottery. The lottery determines the priority order for residence hall assignments. No priority is attached to early payment of the University enrollment deposit. Students who pay the enrollment deposit after May 1 will be notified to access the online application one to two weeks after payment has been received by the University; applications in this group are assigned on a date-received basis.
The application asks your preferences with regard to: nonsmoking or substance-free space; co-ed or single-sex corridor; room rate (triple, double, single); and general geographic location of hall. University Housing will try to accommodate as many of these preferences as possible, but cannot guarantee any specific assignment or meeting any of your preferences. You will also be able to apply for admission to a residential Michigan Learning Community at the same time as you apply for housing.

From Application Until Move-In
Contracts for residence hall space, which include your hall and room type, are provided throughout the summer, beginning in June after your application has been processed.
Incoming residents are generally able to tour the residence hall they have been assigned to during summer orientation (some halls may be closed for construction or summer conferences, but can be viewed via virtual tours on the Housing web site).
During the first week of August, you will be able to access online your specific room assignment, roommate information, room telephone number, and detailed move-in information.
Visiting a Residence Hall
Tours of most residence halls are available Monday–Friday during the U-M spring/summer sessions. Tours are provided to admitted students and family members as part of the Campus Day Program from late January–April, as well as to students participating in the Summer Orientation Program. Virtual tours are available.
